The Nether Challenge

Welcome to Hardcore Survival in the OLD Nether! This challenge takes you back to the classic Nether before the major updates. For the full nostalgic look, activate the Programmer Art texture pack that comes free with every copy of Minecraft Java.
To save you the trouble of using cheat codes to set up this world, you can download my custom challenge map directly on Planet Minecraft. The portal is already built and ready for you.
Once you step through the portal, your goals are simple: survive the harsh environment, travel far from spawn, and collect enough obsidian to build a new portal to escape!

  • Survive the classic Nether environment.
  • Travel far away from your initial spawn point.
  • Collect enough obsidian to build a brand new portal.
  • Step through your new portal to escape and win the challenge.

The Indev Challenge

Welcome to Hardcore Survival in the First Nether! This challenge takes you back to Minecraft's original "Hell" theme before it was reimagined into the Nether we know today. Your goal is simple: survive as long as possible under extreme rules.

The Rules
  • Permadeath: If you die once, the challenge is officially over.
  • Protect the Starter House: You cannot mine, break, or use any blocks from the starter house (wood, stone, or torches). If any part of it is destroyed by you or by mobs, you fail.
  • Day 1 Digging Restriction: You cannot break any dirt blocks on your first day. You must wait until the sun rises on Day 2 to dig dirt. (Gathering stone and ores is allowed immediately).
  • No Hiding or Boxing In: You are not allowed to block the entryway to the starter house or seal yourself inside a tiny hole. You must fight, survive, and build an open, defiant fortress!
  • The Gold Torch Rule: You cannot place torches on normal blocks. Torches can only be placed directly on Gold Ore blocks.
  • The Beacon Exception: To unlock normal lighting, you must build a solid, 4-layer gold pyramid beacon (164 blocks of solid gold) capped with a solid iron block. Once completed, you are allowed to place torches anywhere within a 100-block radius of the beacon.
  • No Cheats: Absolutely no commands or cheats allowed.
